Melodies from a galaxy far, far away: The Mandalorian Theme comes to ROLI Learn
Play along to stellar soundtracks from the Star Wars universe
We know you’ve seen Grogu taking the red carpet by storm the past few weeks. It’s been practically impossible to ignore the excitement around the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise, The Mandalorian and Grogu. And we’ve been excited about it too, so much so that we’ve added The Mandalorian Theme to the ROLI Learn app for all to learn.
For decades now, the Star Wars cinematic universe has been defined by the legendary John Williams’ signature symphonic language. However, Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson’s sonic imprint on the beloved franchise takes a markedly different approach to composing the score for the Disney+ series that premiered in 2019. Göransson, who you may know for his work on Sinners, Oppenheimer, and Black Panther, developed the idea for the Mandalorian score from a simple melody he played on a bass flute. At first, Göransson hesitated over the melody’s simplicity, but that later became its strength, inspiring him to add dramatic piano, mellotron, electric guitars, tribal drums, and an acoustic guitar melody as an introduction.
To complete the composition, Göransson enlisted a full orchestra to “embody the soul of Star Wars and pay homage to the traditional Star Wars sound”. The lonely, marching melody harkens back to Spaghetti Western cinema and brings much of that outlaw mystic. Soon enough, that wooden, slightly ancient, and otherworldly sound became the perfect theme for a lone, wandering bounty hunter.

Across the Stars (Love Theme from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones)
Across the Stars (Love Theme) is the aching romantic centrepiece from Attack of the Clones, written for Anakin and Padmé. Sweeping and bittersweet, it's a beautiful study in melody and phrasing, and a chance to practise playing with real emotional expression.
Cantina Band
Upbeat and full of swing, the jaunty sounds of the Cantina Band are the perfect tune to inject some intergalactic fun into your piano practice or an off-piste song selection for a jam with friends. Cantina Band is pure fun. The jazz-inflected piece featured in the Mos Eisley cantina scene from A New Hope is one of the more playful musical pieces in the Star Wars universe.
Duel of the Fates (from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace)
Duel of the Fates cranks up the action with a piece composed for the climactic lightsaber battle in The Phantom Menace. It's dramatic as it is propulsive, and above all, absolutely epic. We’re sure learning this piece will give you a real sense of achievement and feel powerful to play once you've got it under your fingers.
The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)
A theme that needs no introduction, yet is the perfect introduction to one of cinema’s most iconic antagonists, The Imperial March for Darth Vader is arguably the most famous villain motif ever written. Its dark, commanding melody is endlessly satisfying to play, and it's also a perfect example of how a simple, strong idea can carry immense weight. If you only ever learn one piece of Star Wars music to impress (or intimidate) your friends, this is the one.
In just five songs, we’ve spanned more than four decades of sci-fi storytelling, filled with romance, suspense, and a cultural impact unlike any other. Whether you grew up on the original trilogy or you're heading to see The Mandalorian and Grogu on the big screen as your first Star Wars experience, the music of the franchise is timeless and has touched the hearts of many generations. We’re sure there's a piece of Star Wars music here waiting for you, too. So, grab your Piano, open up the ROLI Learn app, and set off on your own intergalactic journey through music.
