‘Don’t wait for permission’: Taking control of your musical journey with SEIDS
SEIDS shares how she transformed from a pre-COVID performer to a powerful online music production educator, and inspires all to step into their power too.
If you’ve spent any amount of time online looking up music production tutorials, you’ve likely crossed paths with SEIDS. With a community of over 226,000 on Instagram, she shares the knowledge she’s gathered with her years of experience as a performer and producer, likewise with her YouTube channel, offering in-depth music production tutorials to an audience of 83,000 subscribers.
Sabrina Seidman, also known as SEIDS, is a singer, songwriter, producer, and educator. She studied vocal performance at Berklee College of Music with a focus on singing and songwriting, and spent many years as a performer on the gig circuit, building her musical career.
‘Everything changed when I discovered music production and started learning Logic Pro and posting online,’ she explains. ‘That gave me the ability to create the sounds I was hearing in my head, and it completely transformed my path. I began sharing what I was learning online, and over time, that grew into a global community around music production and creative entrepreneurship.’
When asked what one’s musical influences are, it’s pretty common to hear answers that follow along in the vein of formative music heard at a very young age, or having a eureka moment coming across a song on the radio. Many of these stories are in the past. With SEIDS, her inspiration is very much drawn from the present. ‘My biggest influence is actually my audience and the emotions I’m experiencing in my life at the moment. I love writing music based on what I’m feeling and what I’m going through. As I learned production, my style evolved because I began thinking not just about the lyrics and melody, but about the entire sonic world of a song.’
Although SEIDS began her musical journey with a focus on performance, a significant impact on her working life brought on by the COVID pandemic forced her to rethink her career trajectory. ‘Before the pandemic, most of my income came from singing gigs and day jobs like bartending, and almost overnight, they were all canceled,’ she recalls. ‘That’s when I started posting on social media consistently and learning how to produce my own music. For the first time, I felt like I had a real plan to build both creative and financial freedom in music, instead of relying on opportunities that were outside of my control.’
Since then, SEIDS has built a loyal online following around teaching others to take the power of music-making into their own hands. While her courses are available to everyone, her visibility as a woman championing self-made music is undoubtedly an important source of representation that encourages more women to participate in what has long been a male-dominated field. For SEIDS, this fact doesn’t go unnoticed.
‘It’s incredibly meaningful to me. When I first started producing, I didn’t see many women talking about the technical side of music production. If my visibility helps someone feel like they belong in the studio, that’s really special. There are still disparities in the industry, but I’ve also seen a lot of positive change with more women stepping into production, engineering, and music technology.’
In her experience, she’s also seen a noticeable shift in the demographics of music producers, namely an increase of women and/or gender-nonconforming people in the space. ‘More women and diverse creators are stepping into production and sharing their work publicly. There is still progress to be made, but visibility and access to tools and education are helping more people feel empowered to produce their own music.’
It’s no secret that SEIDS has a masterful grasp of Logic Pro, and her production setup has the software at its centre, with a Mac Studio and two Apple displays, giving her plenty of space to shape her sounds. ‘I love having the extra screen space because it makes producing and editing much more fluid. One of my favorite instruments right now is ROLI Piano because it allows for such expressive playing, which really inspires new musical ideas. My microphones tend to change depending on the project, but at the moment I’ve been using the Sony C100. Overall, I like keeping my setup powerful but simple so I can stay focused on creating.’
Taking her expertise with Logic Pro to the masses requires an accessible setup. ‘When teaching, I try to keep things accessible. I often demonstrate concepts using Logic’s built-in instruments and stock plugins so people can start creating immediately without needing expensive gear. More than anything, I focus on teaching workflow and how to think through the production process.’
With the theme of “Give to Gain” for this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations, it's pretty obvious to anyone who has come across SEIDS’ work that she embodies that ethos in full force, readily giving to the music community through her in-depth production tutorials and her Logic Tips & Tricks guidebook. SEIDS’ content empowers people to take the power of music creation into their own hands.
‘To me, “Give to Gain” means sharing value before expecting anything in return. A big part of my career has been built around sharing knowledge through tutorials, classes, and content. When you contribute to a community and genuinely help people, it builds trust and relationships that often lead to opportunities later on.’
SEIDS has always maintained a strong stance of creating your own opportunities, as quoted from her website, “If no one hands you an opportunity... Create your own opportunities.” Navigating the present digital landscape can seem a little like making your way through the Wild West. Oversaturation makes it tough to compete and stand out. With this in mind, she offers some advice to aspiring producers hoping to create their own opportunities.
‘Don’t wait for permission. Today, we have the ability to share our work directly with the world. Start creating, start sharing your process, and let people see what you’re capable of. Visibility creates opportunity. I also believe strongly in investing in education. A couple of courses I bought completely changed my life and helped me learn skills that opened new doors for me. That’s actually why I started creating courses myself, in the hope that they can help other people transform their careers too. I have several courses available at SEIDS.co - some of them are free!’
SEIDS’ focus on sharing and education will carry on into her future projects with new music production courses on the horizon as she further expands her educational platform and continues to work with music technology companies.
‘I have two new courses coming soon: Create a Profitable Music Business and Social Media to Get Gigs and Clients. I’m also working on new music production courses. At the same time, I’m always writing and producing my own music, so there’s definitely more music coming as well.’
