Welcome to a whole new ROLI

A letter from Roland Lamb, CEO and co-founder of ROLI

2024-05 Letter from Roland - Blog@x2

Everyone is musical.

Music is in everyone and everything.

And we’re here to free it. To free the music.

Free the music!

This is fundamentally who we are here at ROLI. Our mission is to harness new technologies and human ingenuity to create tools that free the music in everyone.

A year ago, we had a major company-transforming product breakthrough which created a small problem to solve. As you may know, we have had two websites, ROLI.com and playLUMI.com. We were selling a music learning experience on playLUMI.com and music creation products on ROLI.com.

Today, we’re bringing everything together under one brand, and on one website, and with some very exciting new products to come. Let me explain.

If you’d like to be the first to know more, please sign up here.

When we had this product breakthrough - although I can’t tell you what it is (yet!) - it became clear to us that we had invented a fundamentally revolutionary musical technology, which will change everything about how human beings interact with music. And more importantly, it will radically change how many people can access music engagement. I don’t have a crystal ball - it may or may not be our version of this innovation that succeeds. But mark my words, some version of this technology will define how everyone in the future engages with music.

Because this technology is a fundamental platform enhancement for music engagement, it equally impacts learners and creators, and we realized that Music that is free ultimately does not discriminate between learning and creation. Creation is learning. Learning is creation.

We’ve simplified and unified based on this product integration, have now brought ROLI and LUMI together into a single new expression of ROLI, a ROLI 2.0 if you will.

And as part of our new (but original) brand, we searched for the essence of what we have been doing the last several years, and what we want to do going forward. And at the end of the day, it was very simple. We decided to embrace our boldest hopes and dreams.

We are imagining a near future where more and more people start learning and creating music every day, and it becomes so fun, so easy, so exciting, so encouraging, that it becomes an increasingly globally inclusive celebration of the best in the human spirit.

Please help us contribute to this exciting future.

Roland Lamb
CEO and co-founder
Co-inventor of the Seaboard, BLOCKS, LUMI, and some soon-to-be announced serious magic with the ROLI team.

PS. I want to particularly thank the whole team at DixonBaxi. We worked with this amazing branding agency, and it became a truly inspiring dialogue. Many of the substantive ideas came from us, but they beautifully curated this journey of self-discovery and then they helped find design tools to really bring it to life. This is credit to the thoughtful organization that Simon Dixon and Aporva Baxi have created, and we are so grateful!

Also thanks to DB team members Dan, Jed, Jas, Eva, Alice, Tobi, Haydn, Josh and co.

And special thanks as well to Studio Riley and Chris Riley who is truly an original and deep thinker  and challenged us constantly to find the essence of the essence.

And since I’m thanking people, the ROLI team is the best. You know who you are. Champions, as my co-founder Corey likes to say :)
