Essentials: Midi & MPE

MIDI is short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It's the standard language that allows computers and musical instruments to communicate. MIDI channels can process data from multiple instrument sources, so musicians can record digital instruments or switch between them live.

MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) is the future of MIDI control. MPE lets players modulate parameters like timbre, pitch, and amplitude — all at the same time — so digital instruments can behave more like expressive, acoustic instruments. Using MPE instruments like the ROLI Seaboard or BLOCKS, music makers can record these parameters straight into production software, instead of spending hours of post-performance editing to find the right sound.
